Taipei Detects Chinese Aircraft Carrier Group Near Taiwan
Taipei announced on Wednesday that it had spotted a Chinese aircraft carrier group sailing towards the waters separating Taiwan and China. This comes a day after Beijing conducted a live-fire exercise near the self-ruled island.
The Liaoning aircraft carrier group was observed near the Taipei-administered Pratas Islands, approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Taiwan, and heading north towards the sensitive Taiwan Strait. Taiwan’s defense ministry stated that Chinese navy vessels, led by the aircraft carrier Liaoning, passed through waters near the Pratas Islands and continued towards the Taiwan Strait.
China’s increased military activities around Taiwan are seen as a tactic to assert its sovereignty claims over the island. The Liaoning had recently participated in large-scale military drills around Taiwan, drawing criticism from Taipei and its ally, Washington.
Following the military drills, China announced a live-fire exercise near Taiwan, while a US and Canadian warship navigated through the Taiwan Strait over the weekend. These movements have raised tensions in the region, with Beijing condemning the passage of foreign warships through the strait.
