Chris Cuomo, news anchor and former CNN host, found himself covering his brother’s disappointing mayoral election loss on live television. He was compelled to acknowledge that his brother, Andrew Cuomo, was not the candidate that voters were looking for.

Despite initially avoiding coverage of his brother’s campaign, Chris Cuomo was on air at NewsNation when the race was called for Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate.

“Of course I wanted my brother to win,” Cuomo admitted. “I believe in my brother. I think he’s a tremendous operator within government. But he’s not what Democrats want right now in their party,” he confessed to viewers.

“And Democrats win in New York City… I mean, that’s the one-line analysis is, the Democrat was gonna win in New York City,” Cuomo remarked about the party’s choice not to select his brother, who was the most experienced candidate in the race.

“But the type of Democrat and what they want, I do believe, there’s a metaphor here as a reaction to MAGA, and this is what we’ll see in the midterms,” Cuomo added.

At the time of reporting, Mamdani was leading with 52% of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 40%, with only 35% of the votes counted.

The eventual winner, Zohran Mamdani, secured 50.4% of the vote, with Cuomo at 41.6% and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 7.1%.
