Christopher Nolan, the renowned director and newly elected president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), recently shared his thoughts on President Donald Trump’s plan to impose 100% taxes on films made outside the United States. In an interview with Deadline, Nolan expressed uncertainty about how a tariff system would work but acknowledged that the studios are now engaging in serious discussions on how to enhance the film industry in the United States.

Last year, President Trump made it clear that he intended to impose heavy tariffs on foreign-made movies, claiming that other countries were stealing America’s filmmaking business. He announced his plans on Truth Social, stating that a 100% tariff would be imposed on movies made outside the US to address the issue. Additionally, Trump suggested the introduction of a low-interest bond program for the movie industry, although specific details on implementation remain undisclosed.

Shifting gears, Nolan also delved into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the film industry. He emphasized the importance of having a voice in how AI tools are utilized and the legal frameworks surrounding them. With AI being used for targeted advertisements during movies, Nolan highlighted the challenges it poses for filmmakers, particularly in maintaining creative control and maximizing the value of their work.

Nolan also discussed Disney’s collaboration with OpenAI, allowing users to interact with Disney characters through Sora. While he sees the licensing principle positively, he emphasized the need to ensure fair compensation for union members involved.

On a lighter note, Nolan’s upcoming film, “The Odyssey,” is set to hit theaters in July 2026, boasting a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, and more. As the industry continues to navigate the evolving landscape shaped by AI and global trade policies, Nolan’s insights shed light on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
