The mystery surrounding the CIA Kryptos puzzle sculpture has deepened with the release of final clues by artist Jim Sanborn. Speaking at the International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C., Sanborn revealed that the “K4” section of the sculpture has not been fully deciphered, contrary to previous claims. The encrypted message, consisting of 79 letters beginning with “OBKR,” will be auctioned off later this month.

Sanborn, aged 79, emphasized that K4 remains unsolved, despite reports in September that journalists had cracked the code. The artist’s decision to provide additional hints before selling the solution reflects his desire to pass on crucial information to the future owner of Kryptos.

The Kryptos sculpture, installed at the CIA headquarters in 1990, features four coded messages that have intrigued cryptographers and the public for decades. Sanborn also announced the forthcoming release of a new puzzle, “K5,” which will be unveiled once K4 is solved. This 97-character message will be connected thematically to the previous puzzles and will share some coded words in the same positions.

During his presentation, Sanborn shared four new clues to cracking the full solution of Kryptos. These clues include references to a 1986 trip to Egypt, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the World Clock in Berlin, and the overarching theme of delivering a message embedded within the codes.

The Kryptos puzzles have historical significance, drawing inspiration from encryption methods used during World War II and the Cold War. While the first three puzzles were deciphered in the 1990s using Vigenère ciphers and transposition codes, K4’s encoding method remains a mystery. Sanborn, known for his creative approach to puzzle-making, hinted at a buried secret culmination to his puzzles, adding to the intrigue surrounding Kryptos.

As the auction of Kryptos materials approaches, Sanborn has developed an artificial intelligence answering system to handle claims of deciphering K4. The winner of the auction will receive access to this system, further enhancing the interactive nature of the puzzle.

The ongoing saga of Kryptos continues to captivate audiences and challenge cryptographers worldwide. With Sanborn’s final clues shedding new light on the unsolved mysteries within the sculpture, the quest for the complete solution is sure to intensify in the coming weeks.
