Former “Love Island USA” contestant Cierra Ortega has broken her silence following her unexpected departure from the show on the July 6 episode. Narrator Iain Stirling announced that she left the reality dating series for “personal reasons,” but Cierra had been facing backlash on social media after an alleged past social media post resurfaced in which she used racist language.

In a heartfelt Instagram post shared on Wednesday, Ortega addressed the controversy surrounding her exit from “Love Island USA” and expressed her desire to address the issue with a clear mind and without being overwhelmed by emotions.

“During my time in the villa, some old posts from my past resurfaced where I had naively used an offensive and derogatory term,” she explained. “I want to sincerely apologize to anyone I have hurt or offended, especially the Asian community. I am truly sorry. I was unaware of the hurtful and harmful nature of the word and the history it carries. If I had known, I would never have used it.”

Cierra took responsibility for her actions but emphasized that she had no knowledge of the term’s derogatory connotations until a follower informed her in a public story post in 2024.

The fallout from her controversial post also affected her family, with Cierra revealing that they had been subjected to threats and harassment. She expressed her distress over the situation and urged for a peaceful resolution, emphasizing that responding to hate with hate was not the answer.

In a statement shared on her Instagram story, Cierra’s family condemned the online hate and harassment directed towards her and those close to her. They acknowledged the validity of the criticism but denounced the vitriolic attacks and threats as unnecessary and hurtful.

Cierra’s departure marks the second time this season that a “Love Island” contestant has been removed from the show due to past controversial comments resurfacing online. Yulissa Escobar was also removed early in the season for similar reasons.

The aftermath of Cierra’s exit serves as a reminder of the power of social media and the importance of accountability in today’s digital age. As she navigates the fallout from her past actions, Cierra remains committed to learning from her mistakes and moving forward with a newfound understanding of the impact of her words and actions.
