The outlook for 2025 is riddled with uncertainty, particularly due to the tariff policies introduced by President Trump on ‘Liberation Day’ in April. The market response to these announcements was severe, with the S&P 500 experiencing a significant decline. The first quarter of the year saw a mix of enthusiasm and concern regarding de-regulation, lower taxes, and trade policy, but the tariff details shocked investors and led to a panic in the market.

Following the initial decline, the market has bounced back slightly but still remains below its all-time high. The administration is working on making tariff-reducing deals with various nations, creating a state of flux that is making it difficult for companies to plan ahead. This uncertainty is causing both businesses and consumers to hold off on spending until there is more clarity on the situation.

While tariffs are a major factor in the current economic landscape, other issues such as inflation, job cuts, and geopolitical tensions are also weighing on investor sentiment. The U.S. economy is still on a solid foundation, with healthy employment and prospects for earnings growth, but the ongoing trade war adjustments are likely to pose challenges in the year ahead.

Looking back at previous years, investors have been focused on monetary policy, but the attention is now shifting towards fiscal policy as the administration plans to cut taxes further. Geopolitical events, such as the war between Israel and Hamas and tensions in Ukraine, are also impacting the global economic outlook.

In China, economic activity has been improving, but the ongoing trade war with the U.S. is threatening to disrupt trade between the two largest economies in the world. The global macro-environment had been favorable for U.S. stocks, but the recent tariffs and trade tensions are posing risks to long-term economic growth.

Despite these challenges, we expect the U.S. economy to continue expanding in 2025, albeit at a slower pace. The Federal Reserve has been successful in reducing inflation, but challenges remain in reaching the 2% target. The Fed’s outlook for rate cuts in 2025 could be impacted by the tariffs and inflation concerns.

At the sector level, strong growth is expected in Healthcare earnings, while sectors like Energy, Materials, and Industrials are projected to see improved performance compared to 2024. Energy prices have been volatile, but a better balance in the supply-demand equation could help stabilize the market.

Overall, the outlook for 2025 is uncertain, with tariff policies, inflation, and geopolitical tensions posing risks to economic growth. Investors will need to closely monitor developments in the market and adjust their strategies accordingly to navigate through the challenges ahead.
