Remembering the Iconic 2010 Macy’s Christmas Flash Mob

Christmas flash mobs have become a popular trend in recent years, with one particular flash mob from 2010 at a Macy’s department store in Philadelphia standing out as one of the best ever witnessed.

A variety of singing groups in the area disguised themselves as shoppers and, at a pre-arranged time, simultaneously burst into song, performing the iconic ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ from Handel’s Messiah.

The impromptu performance captivated all other shoppers in the store, who stopped in their tracks to listen in awe.

The YouTube description of the event provides further insight into the magical moment:

On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia orchestrated a surprise performance at Macy’s in Center City Philadelphia. Over 650 choristers from 28 organizations came together to deliver a ‘Random Act of Culture,’ stunning shoppers with a rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s “Messiah” accompanied by the world’s largest pipe organ, the Wanamaker Organ.

Witness the breathtaking spectacle in the video below:

Legend has it that Handel himself experienced a divine revelation while composing this masterpiece, with reports suggesting he exclaimed to his assistant that he had ‘seen the face of God.’ The transcendent nature of the music continues to resonate, making it a fitting tribute to the spirit of Christmas. Merry Christmas!
