Anthropic, a leader in AI coding assistants, is introducing Voice Mode to Claude Code, their AI coding assistant for developers. This new feature represents a significant advancement towards more hands-free and conversational coding workflows.

Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, announced the gradual release of Voice Mode on X, stating that the feature is now live for approximately 5% of users, with plans for a broader rollout in the upcoming weeks.

Voice Mode is designed to enhance the coding experience by allowing users to interact with Claude Code through spoken commands. By simply typing /voice to toggle the feature on, users can speak their commands, such as “refactor the authentication middleware,” and Claude Code will execute the request.

The specific limitations of Voice Mode, including any restrictions on voice interactions or technical constraints, are currently unclear. It is also unknown whether this feature was developed in collaboration with a third-party AI voice provider like ElevenLabs, with whom Anthropic was reportedly in discussions.

Despite requests for comment, the company has not yet provided further details about Voice Mode. Anthropic previously launched Voice Mode for their standard Claude chatbot last year, enabling users to engage with the model via voice for various general-purpose tasks.

In a competitive landscape of AI coding assistants, Claude Code stands out as one of the most widely utilized tools in the market. In a recent report, Anthropic disclosed that Claude Code’s run-rate revenue exceeded $2.5 billion, doubling since the beginning of the year, with a significant increase in weekly active users.

Additionally, Claude’s mobile app experienced a surge in user growth after declining the Department of Defense’s request to use their AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. This decision propelled the app to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, surpassing ChatGPT in popularity.

As the development of Voice Mode continues to unfold, developers can anticipate a more seamless and interactive coding experience with Claude Code, further solidifying its position as a leading AI coding assistant in the industry.
