CNN is making significant strides in expanding its presence in the Middle East with the announcement of a new operation in Qatar. This move is part of CNN’s broader strategy to enhance its global and regional content creation capabilities, as stated in a recent press release.

The addition of Qatar to CNN’s network will complement its existing Middle East programming and news gathering hubs, which are currently located in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Abu Dhabi serves as the headquarters for shows like “Connect the World with Becky Anderson,” while Dubai is home to CNN Arabic and various bureaus across the region.

Qatar, a key player in recent diplomatic efforts such as negotiating the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, is also known for being the home country and a major supporter of the Al Jazeera news organization, CNN’s primary competitor in the region.

The new CNN operation in Qatar is set to launch in the second half of 2025 and will be based in Doha’s Media City Qatar, a burgeoning hub for global media and technology companies. A team of CNN content creators will focus on publishing digital and social media content, as well as producing a new weekly show for CNN International.

Mike McCarthy, EVP and managing editor of CNN Worldwide, expressed CNN’s deep commitment to editorial coverage of the Middle East. He highlighted the importance of enhancing reporting capabilities, introducing cutting-edge studio facilities, and telling a wider range of stories from the region through innovative means, including the upcoming weekly show.

Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, chairman of Media City Qatar, welcomed CNN to the ecosystem, emphasizing the role of Media City Qatar as a place for respected media brands to collaborate and innovate. He underscored Qatar’s strategic position in shaping global conversations from the heart of the Middle East, highlighting the progress and impact that the country is making on a global scale.

In conclusion, CNN’s expansion into Qatar marks a significant milestone in the network’s efforts to deepen its presence and coverage in the Middle East. With a focus on innovative storytelling and collaboration, CNN is poised to deliver compelling content to audiences worldwide from its new operation in Qatar.
