Purdue University Undergrads Break Guinness World Record for Fastest Rubik’s Cube-Solving Robot

A team of undergraduate students at Purdue University in Indiana has shattered Mitsubishi’s record for designing the world’s fastest Rubik’s cube-solving robot. The Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Purdue recently announced that four collaborators successfully built a bot that not only set a new Guinness World Record but also outperformed the multinational company’s previous achievement. Meet Purdubik’s Cube, a machine capable of solving a randomly shuffled Rubik’s cube in an astonishing 0.103 seconds—faster than the blink of a human eye.

Mitsubishi made headlines back in May 2024 when its TOKUFASTbot solved a Rubik’s cube puzzle in just 0.305 seconds. However, the team at Purdue University, consisting of Matthew Patrohay, Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd, and Alex Berta, believed they could push the boundaries further. In a matter of months, they designed and built Purdubik’s Cube, which surpassed expectations by completing the task in record time.

According to ECE head Milind Kulkarni, the Purdue team’s robot is not only faster than human reaction time but also incredibly efficient. The robot solves the cube before most people even realize it’s in motion, showcasing the team’s dedication and innovation in robotics.

One of the main challenges faced by the Purdue team was the fragility of the Rubik’s cube itself. The pieces tended to disintegrate under the pressure of the robot’s speed. To address this issue, the team optimized the mechanical interior of their test cubes, creating a custom-built core to hold the pieces together and modifying the individual color blocks for better stability.

Ahead of the Guinness World Record trial on April 21, the Purdue team aimed to further improve their robot’s performance, hoping to achieve a time under a tenth of a second. While the current record stands at 0.103 seconds, the team is confident that future advancements may lead to even faster solving times.

The achievement of the Purdue University undergraduates showcases the potential for groundbreaking innovations in robotics and engineering. With their record-breaking robot, they have not only surpassed industry giants but also set a new standard for speed and precision in Rubik’s cube-solving technology. The future of robotics looks promising, with teams like Purdue continuously pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field. The importance of self-care in today’s fast-paced world cannot be overstated. In a society that glorifies the hustle and grind, it can be easy to neglect our own well-being in favor of productivity and success. However, taking care of ourselves is essential for our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Self-care encompasses a wide range of activities that promote overall wellness. This can include anything from getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, practicing mindfulness and meditation, spending time with loved ones, setting boundaries, and engaging in activities that bring us joy and relaxation.

One of the key benefits of self-care is stress reduction. When we prioritize taking care of ourselves, we are better equipped to handle the challenges and demands of everyday life. Stress can have a negative impact on our physical health, leading to issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and weakened immune system. By engaging in self-care practices, we can lower our stress levels and improve our overall well-being.

Self-care also plays a crucial role in maintaining good mental health. In a world that is constantly bombarding us with information and stimuli, it is important to take time to quiet the mind and focus on our mental well-being. Activities such as meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature can help to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm.

Additionally, self-care can improve our relationships with others. When we take care of ourselves, we are better able to show up as our best selves in our interactions with others. By setting boundaries and prioritizing our own needs, we can prevent burnout and resentment in our relationships.

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to neglect self-care in favor of productivity and success. However, taking care of ourselves is essential for our overall well-being. By prioritizing self-care activities, we can reduce stress, improve our mental health, and enhance our relationships with others. It is important to remember that self-care is not selfish, but rather a necessary component of a healthy and fulfilling life.
