Gun Thief at Nassau County Military Museum Gets Shot Down by Internet Trolls
A man who stole a replica World War II pistol from a Nassau County military museum found himself in the line of fire as internet trolls took aim at him online.
The suspect, identified as a patron wearing a baseball hat with a rifle stitched on it, made off with a replica Colt 1911A1 from the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage. The museum, known for its demonstrations with tanks and other artillery, described the thief as “a thief of America’s military heritage.”
The theft occurred when the suspect allegedly removed the gun from a holster attached to a model and concealed it in his shorts pocket before fleeing the scene around 12:50 p.m. last week. Fortunately, the gun is non-functional.
The museum took to social media to ask for the public’s help in identifying the thief, with the post being shared nearly 600 times since it was published on Friday. They urged anyone who recognized the suspect to reach out so that justice could be served.
However, instead of focusing on the crime itself, some social media users couldn’t resist taking shots at the suspect’s appearance. Comments ranged from jokes about his weight to comparisons to having tank helmets under his shirt.
Despite the humor at the suspect’s expense, authorities are still actively searching for him in hopes of recovering the stolen gun and holding him accountable for his actions. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Nassau County Police Department.
