Chicago Police are currently conducting a homicide investigation after a tragic incident in the South Loop that resulted in a fatal traffic crash. The incident occurred overnight when a tow truck driver collided with an SUV in the 100 block of West Roosevelt. The impact caused the SUV to crash into another vehicle, resulting in three victims being ejected from their Chevy Tahoe after it struck a wall.
Tragically, a 21-year-old woman who sustained a severe head injury passed away at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other two victims, a 20-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, are in critical condition at the same hospital with head injuries. The scene of the crash was chaotic, with two victims found lying on the sidewalk on Roosevelt Road next to their badly damaged Tahoe, adorned with a Mexican flag on the driver’s side.
The SUV driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation. However, the tow truck driver responsible for causing the initial collision fled the scene. Witnesses reported that the tow truck driver was speeding and chasing another vehicle before the crash occurred.
The downtown area was bustling with people celebrating the Mexican Independence Day weekend, adding to the tragedy of the situation. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Unit is working alongside Area Three detectives to piece together the details of the incident and bring justice to the victims.
This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have. As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
