Chicago Police Seek Suspects Linked to Shooting at St. Sabina Catholic Church
Chicago police are on the lookout for two individuals and a vehicle connected to a triple shooting outside St. Sabina Catholic Church on the South Side. This incident marks the second significant shooting outside the church this year, where renowned anti-violence activist Father Michael Pfleger serves as senior pastor.
The shooting occurred on Sunday afternoon following an altercation inside the church gym during a men’s basketball league game. Shortly after the dispute, gunshots rang out outside the church located at 1210 West 78th Street, resulting in injuries to three men aged 30, 33, and 39. The victims were transported to hospitals and are currently in stable condition.
It was revealed that church security does not conduct pat-downs or bag checks for players or spectators attending the basketball games.
Surveillance images of the two suspects and a dark-colored, newer-model Mazda SUV believed to be involved in the shooting have been released by detectives.
The first suspect is described as a Black male with medium-length dreadlocks, a dark complexion, and a heavy build, wearing a black Chicago White Sox baseball cap, a black puffy jacket, black pants, and black gym shoes. The second suspect is identified as a Black male with short hair, a medium-length beard, a medium complexion, and a heavy build, wearing a black baseball cap, a black puffy jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and white gym shoes.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Area Two detectives at 312-747-8271 or submit anonymous tips at CPDTIP.com referencing case number JJ537300.
St. Sabina’s congregation, led by Father Michael Pfleger, has been a vocal advocate against gun violence and for criminal justice reform in Chicago. The church frequently hosts gun turn-in events in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department.
This latest shooting incident follows a previous mass shooting outside the church earlier this year on May 31, where seven individuals between the ages of 17 and 19 were wounded by a drive-by gunman who fired over 50 rounds into a crowd.
No arrests have been made in connection with the May shooting.
