911 calls reporting the fight and gunfire prompted officers to be dispatched to the scene. Approximately three minutes later, an officer radioed in, “Shots fired! Shots fired!” and declared a police emergency in an alley behind West Belmont Avenue.
The Chicago Police Department released a statement regarding the shooting incident:
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, at approximately 2:10 a.m., Chicago Police Department officers from the 25th (Grand Central) District were responding to a call of a battery in progress and shots fired at a business establishment on North Central Avenue.
Upon arrival, an employee of the business informed officers that an offender had fired a gun during a large fight outside the establishment. The employee directed officers to the offender, who was attempting to flee in a red pickup truck. As officers approached the vehicle, they ordered the offender to exit. However, the offender accelerated the vehicle towards the officers, striking one of them. In response, the officers discharged their weapons at the vehicle. The offender fled the scene but was later found in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue. The 28-year-old offender had sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition. A weapon was recovered from the offender’s vehicle.
The Investigative Response Team is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has been notified and is also conducting an investigation.
The officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days. The investigation is ongoing, and further inquiries can be directed to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
