The British Fashion Council has honored Kate Hawley, a talented New Zealand costume designer, with the prestigious Costume Designer of the Year award. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom on December 1, and Hawley has eagerly traveled from Wellington to attend.

Hawley’s exceptional work as a costume designer for the recent Netflix film Frankenstein has garnered widespread acclaim. In response to the recognition, she expressed feelings of overwhelming gratitude and excitement.

Having studied at the Wellington School of Design and further honed her skills at London’s renowned Motley School of Theatre Design, Hawley credits New Zealand for providing her with valuable opportunities that have shaped her career. She acknowledges the influence of various individuals, cultures, and projects that have influenced her unique approach to costume design.

Prior to her work on Frankenstein, Hawley collaborated with esteemed directors such as Guillermo del Toro on projects like Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim. Her impressive portfolio includes involvement in iconic productions like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Hobbit trilogy.

Hawley’s innovative and narrative-driven approach to costume design has been praised by the British Fashion Council. Her ability to craft costumes that not only define characters but also enhance storytelling has set her apart in the industry.

In addition to the Costume Designer of the Year award, Hawley recently received the Special Achievement in Costume Design Award at the Middleburg Film Festival and has been nominated for Best Costume Design at the upcoming Astra Film Awards in Los Angeles.
