In an initial clinical study, six individuals with peanut allergies demonstrated an increased tolerance to small amounts of peanuts for up to four months following a fecal microbiome transplant delivered via stool capsules.

The outcomes of this Phase 1 clinical trial, published in Science Translational Medicine on Wednesday, indicate that fecal microbiome transplants could emerge as a promising treatment for peanut allergies, according to experts.

“We, as the food allergy community, have been waiting for these results,” said Stephen Tilles, an allergist-immunologist and clinical professor at the University of Washington, who was not involved in the study. Tilles described the findings as “very exciting,” although he noted they may not yet be “ready for prime time.”
