Efforts are underway to locate the Plains Sharp-Tailed Grouse following sightings of the rare bird near Roxborough State Park.
A poster at Roxborough State Park, as noticed by Reddit user happylustig, urges individuals who spot the state-endangered bird to inform Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). The organization is keen on monitoring the bird’s presence in the area due to recent reports of sightings.
If anyone comes across the bird, they are encouraged to capture a photo or video and contact CPW directly. The poster mentioned in the Reddit post includes the phone number of a CPW employee, but it is recommended to reach out only if you are in the immediate vicinity of Roxborough State Park. Sightings in other parts of the state should be reported to the appropriate CPW office.
The Plains Sharp-Tailed Grouse, once abundant around Roxborough and Sharptail Ridge Open Space, has now become less common in the area.
CPW is gathering more data to aid in the protection of these birds. These grouse typically stay within a 10-mile radius, so if one is sighted, there is a high likelihood it will remain in that vicinity for an extended period.
