A CVS worker, Scott Enoe, found himself in a harrowing situation when he was forced to defend himself and his coworkers from an unhinged serial shoplifter inside a Midtown store. Enoe testified in court that he used a knife in self-defense after the crazed thief, Charles Brito, attacked him relentlessly, leaving him no choice but to protect himself and his colleagues.

Enoe, a 48-year-old man from Grenada, described how Brito ambushed him from behind while he was restocking drinks in a cooler, throwing punches and slamming his head against the refrigerated unit. Despite being overpowered initially, Enoe managed to pull Brito away from his female coworkers when he saw the thief approaching them aggressively, prompting Brito to lunge at him repeatedly.

In a desperate attempt to fend off the attacker, Enoe used a small folding knife to jab at Brito, fearing for the safety of his coworkers. He emphasized that his actions were driven by the need to protect the women from the violent and unpredictable thief. However, Enoe expressed regret for the stabbing and admitted that he did not realize the extent of Brito’s injuries at the time.

Prosecutors alleged that Enoe stabbed Brito eight times, causing fatal injuries that led to the thief’s death. Enoe’s coworkers testified in court, recounting the chilling threats and aggressive behavior displayed by Brito before the fatal altercation. They corroborated Enoe’s account of the events, highlighting the chaotic and dangerous situation that unfolded in the store.

Enoe, who is currently out on $100,000 bail, faces a manslaughter charge that could result in up to 25 years in prison if convicted. The jury will soon begin deliberations to determine whether Enoe’s actions were justified in the face of imminent danger. The outcome of the trial hinges on whether the jurors believe Enoe acted reasonably to protect himself and his coworkers from harm.

The case underscores the complex and challenging circumstances faced by retail workers who often find themselves in vulnerable positions when dealing with aggressive individuals. Enoe’s testimony sheds light on the difficult decisions he had to make in a life-threatening situation, emphasizing the need for adequate safety measures and support for workers in similar environments.
