Dabin Ahn’s latest exhibition, “Circle of Life,” showcases a trio of small pottery shards that are delicately displayed in a walnut frame. These shards, two painted on linen and one terracotta, depict various stages of vitality, from a speckled butterfly to a snuffed-out candle with a thin wisp of smoke trailing onto the canvas. Blurring the line between two and three dimensions, Ahn’s work often balances deep shadows and melancholic moods with soft lighting from candles and fireflies.

Ahn, born in Seoul to a creative family, draws inspiration from his father, renowned actor Ahn Sung-Ki, and his background in filmmaking. After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ahn settled into representation, focusing on self-portraits and still life. His vessels reflect the white porcelain ware of the Joseon dynasty, with cobalt motifs adding a unique twist to traditional forms.

The artist’s latest body of work, “Good Things Take Time,” reflects a personal journey of hope and healing. Following his father’s cancer diagnosis in 2020, Ahn spent four years processing his emotions through his art. Last year, he decided to start fresh, incorporating taper candles into his work as a meditative and calming element. This new approach led him to carve away sections of frames, revealing smaller works within the larger compositions.

Candles play a significant role in Ahn’s new paintings, symbolizing hope and warmth amidst somber elements. Butterflies and moths painted on the pottery shards are juxtaposed with lively insects casting shadows as they flutter across the canvas. Ahn’s goal is to create works that are approachable and inviting to all audiences, regardless of their background.

Although his previous work was rooted in sadness, Ahn’s latest pieces exude brightness and hope. “I think I’m done with the really sad sadness,” the artist says. “It’s bright, almost happy. There’s hope this time.” “Good Things Take Time” is currently on view at Harper’s Gallery in New York, offering a glimpse into Ahn’s introspective and evocative artistic journey.
