A powerful winter storm is currently wreaking havoc across the United States, with meteorologists warning of blizzard conditions and heavy snowfall in the east. This storm, set to be one of the worst in a decade, is affecting more than 60 million people and is causing severe travel disruptions.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings from western Kansas all the way to the coastal states of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. This unusually broad 1,500-mile swath is under immediate threat from ice, snow, and gale-force winds.

According to the latest report from the NWS, the storm is expected to produce heavy snowfall and wind gusts exceeding 40 mph in parts of Kansas and Missouri. Snowfall amounts are predicted to exceed 15 inches, making it the heaviest snowfall in a decade.

Scientists attribute the severity of this storm to manmade climate change, which is causing extreme weather events to become more common and severe.

The first major storm of 2025 has already disrupted travel, with Kansas City International Airport temporarily closing its flight operations due to rapid ice accumulation. Flight operations have since resumed after runways and taxiways were treated.

Parts of New York and Pennsylvania are facing heavy lake-effect snow coming off the Great Lakes, with the potential of up to two feet of snow. Forecasters are predicting that the total snowfall in the region could exceed four feet.

A blizzard is expected to hit the Central Plains by early Sunday, with whiteout conditions making travel extremely hazardous. The US capital, Washington, could see up to five inches of snow, with temperatures plunging below zero degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.

Freezing rain and sleet are expected from Kansas to Virginia, posing a threat to road conditions and potentially causing power outages. Governors of Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia have declared a state of emergency in their states, urging residents to prepare for hazardous weather conditions.

In conclusion, this winter storm is a significant threat to millions of people in the eastern United States, with the potential for severe travel disruptions, power outages, and dangerous road conditions. It is important for residents in the affected areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this extreme weather event.
