American Idol alum, David Archuleta, has formed deep connections with reality TV stars Heather Gay and Jessi Ngatikaura, thanks to their shared experiences with the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Archuleta recently had Jessi host one of his book tour nights in Salt Lake City, where they bonded over their upbringing in the Mormon church and their decision to leave the religion behind.
The 35-year-old singer, who publicly came out as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in 2021, explained how he and Ngatikaura, who was raised partly in the LDS church, are bringing awareness to issues within their former religion and culture that are often overlooked or ignored.
Archuleta also found a kindred spirit in Heather Gay, star of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, who left the Mormon church after her divorce. Despite not watching Housewives, Archuleta was touched by Gay’s unwavering support after his coming out and invited her to one of his concerts. In return, Gay gifted him copies of her memoirs and the two have become texting buddies, constantly cheering each other on.
Since leaving the Mormon church and embracing his true self, Archuleta has been focused on living passionately and authentically. He hopes to inspire others to do the same and create a sense of community outside of the religious one he once knew. Through his music and personal journey, Archuleta aims to help others feel seen, connected, and supported.
As he continues to navigate this new chapter of his life, Archuleta remains grateful for the friendships he has formed with Heather Gay and Jessi Ngatikaura, who understand the challenges of being in the spotlight and staying true to oneself. Their support and friendship have been invaluable as he forges his own path and builds a new community outside of the one he left behind.
