It’s a widely acknowledged yet seldom discussed truth within American political circles: Donald Trump’s influence is waning. This decline is not merely a talking point; it has real implications for the country’s trajectory and the lives of its citizens.
In my extensive career spanning over two decades in political coverage, I have never encountered a president who felt compelled to comment on his spouse’s undergarments. George W. Bush, for instance, didn’t pause during discussions about the 9/11 attacks to delve into the intimate details of Laura Bush’s clothing.

Similarly, Barack Obama didn’t take a break from announcing critical measures to rescue the U.S. auto industry amid the Great Recession to offer a lengthy reflection on Michelle Obama’s wardrobe choices.
Even Joe Biden, often portrayed by the media as having cognitive difficulties, would never stoop to making such an embarrassing remark about his wife in front of the nation.
Yet, when Donald Trump engages in behavior that is so bizarre and unpresidential that it stands out from the norm, the billionaire-dominated media merely shrug it off, attributing it to Trump’s unique personality.
Consider Trump’s recent remarks in North Carolina as he complained about the search of his golf club for classified documents he allegedly misappropriated and withheld:
“They went into my wife’s closet, and I’ll say this number one, it’s very bad, but it sounds a little strange. They looked at her drawers.”
“You have drawer, and then you have drawer. They looked at both. And she’s a very meticulous person. You know, like these people just like she’d fit into your group very well. She’d be very happy with her, but everything is perfect. Her undergarments so, and this sometimes referred to as panties are folded, perfect wrapped.”
