The Democratic Party appears to be grappling with the very “monsters” it has nurtured over the years. In a landscape shaped by radical ideologies and extreme cultural policies, their internal unity is starting to fray. The realization that their approach might not align with the broader American sentiment has prompted some candid admissions.
Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) sent shockwaves through CNN’s audience when he confessed that the Democratic Party has lost touch with many Americans, having prioritized the demands of radical activists over the voices of ordinary voters.
During a conversation with Pamela Brown, a correspondent known for her progressive leanings, Moulton articulated how the party’s fixation on ideological purity—particularly regarding issues like transgender athletes competing in women’s sports—has left them disconnected from mainstream perspectives.
Pamela Brown:
Recent polling reveals significant dissatisfaction among Democrats, with CNN reporting a favorability rating of just 29%—a historic low. Furthermore, 77% of Democratic voters feel their representatives are insufficiently opposing Trump. What do you attribute to this failure?Seth Moulton:
We are failing on two fronts. First, we need to stand up more effectively to Trump. But we also need to reform our party because we performed poorly in elections that should have been straightforward wins. When have we ever faced a convicted felon as a major candidate? Yet we lost because many Americans feel we are out of touch.
Moulton’s revelation that Democrats fear challenging the radical left illustrates the party’s struggle with its own ideological boundaries, leaving many members hesitant to voice dissenting opinions regarding the party’s cultural agenda.
Pamela Brown:
How can you reform the party to be more in tune with everyday Americans?Seth Moulton:
We have become a party that condescends to others, equating disagreement with moral failing. Many national Democrats have adopted this stance in recent years. We need to shift from preaching to listening—engaging with Americans where they stand. We shouldn’t impose strict liberal litmus tests that exclude many from our party. For instance, when I suggested we debate rules regarding transgender women in sports, I faced backlash, with people suggesting I was not a true Democrat. This attitude is detrimental; a majority party cannot thrive by alienating majority viewpoints.
Currently, 80% of Americans reject this rigid liberal test. We must be more astute in listening to the public. My role is to represent Americans—not dictate their thoughts but advocate for their interests in Congress.
Seth Moulton:
If more Democrats embraced this approach, we would likely see greater success as a party.Pamela Brown:
Interestingly, Governor Newsom seems to have shifted his stance on this issue.Seth Moulton:
I’ve heard many colleagues express agreement with me privately, thanking me for my op-ed in The Washington Post. However, they whisper it, fearing backlash from the party’s left wing.
