In a scene that resembles a political thriller gone awry, Democrat Sarah McArthur, self-identified as a “veteran” and “corporate administrative law judge,” stepped onto the campaign trail with a less-than-diplomatic approach. During what was meant to be a routine interaction with voters, she was captured on video unleashing an offensive slur directed at a conservative local resident.
The clip, shared by Tracy De La Rosa, illustrates McArthur’s reaction to being informed that the homeowner planned to support her opponent. With a flair for the dramatic, McArthur referred to conservative voters as “MAGA faggots,” raising eyebrows and ire alike.
De La Rosa, a former candidate for state representative, pressed McArthur on her association with Emerge New Mexico, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the presence of Democratic women and non-binary leaders from various backgrounds in politics.
In an apparent reference to a tragic event involving Charlie Kirk, De La Rosa remarked, “A month ago today Charlie Kirk was shot and killed because someone didn’t like his opinion.”
Sarah McArthur: Anyway, I’m a veteran and a corporate administrative law judge. I just recently retired five years ago, so I have time now to be on the school board. I’ve never been on the school board before, but I’m sure I can handle it.
Tracy De La Rosa: Okay, all right. Do you have anything to do with the Emerge groups?
Sarah McArthur: Oh, how do you know about Emerge?
Tracy De La Rosa: Because I ran for state representative. I’m Tracy De La Rosa.
Sarah McArthur: Oh, okay. All right. Well, I do. I actually sent Alicia Gilmore.
Tracy De La Rosa: Thank you.
Sarah McArthur: This is a nonpartisan race.
Tracy De La Rosa: I know.
Sarah McArthur: Yeah. But you’re not interested in—
Tracy De La Rosa: No, ma’am. I’ll vote for Mona. We don’t want Emerge candidates in New Mexico.
Sarah McArthur: Well, we don’t want MAGA faggots either. (Laughing)
Tracy De La Rosa: Did you say faggot because I got it on camera.
Sarah McArthur: Good. I’m glad.
Tracy De La Rosa: See you on Facebook.

In a twist of irony, McArthur recently assumed the role of the victim, claiming that she is merely an “imperfect human” who encountered undue “hostility.”
De La Rosa did not hold back in her rebuttal:
“She came to my house on a Friday afternoon, walks through my yard and calls me a slur and now she’s the victim. Hell yeah I’m going to share this. I hope it helps every single local race in the country. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
Meanwhile, McArthur attempted to justify her comments in a social media update, acknowledging her use of foul language:
“I also enjoyed our visit as well. I appreciated your kindness and verbal support while I was talking with you. I am human and therefore an imperfect person. I apologize to you as well as all the other gracious and kind people I have met while door knocking. I am attempting to force a campaign for a seat largely just given away because there is never any opposition. With failing test scores and the lack of graduation rates uppermost in my mind, I was not prepared for the open hostility I was greeted with by the person who has had a field day promoting her video. It is supposed to be a non-partisan race, although this woman and several others in the community seem to believe it is partisan. Asking me about Emerge was a politically motivated question. I was not expecting it and after she told me her name I realized I was talking to a woman who has been outwardly and aggressively supportive of the most divisive and extremist positions our country has by being a MAGA supporter. I responded inappropriately for the moment. She may have won this particular battle, but the war for the soul of this country continues. I can and will do better. Everyone I know will tell me I should not be responding to your comment, but I genuinely liked our talk and so I apologize for not living up to expectations. Please vote your conscience. I will admit what I meant to say was on the verge of a vulgar swear word but I cut myself off thinking it was not appropriate, only to have the word that was spoken be even worse. Swearing is my lifelong struggle. I remain committed to all people living their lives in whatever manner brings them joy and happiness. I support LGBTQ rights in all fashions.”
Sarah McArthur’s campaign for kindness just crashed and burned on camera. This incident raises questions about the authenticity of political dialogue when candidates think the cameras are off.
