Examining the Disarray of the Trump Administration
How chaotic and ill-prepared is the Trump administration? A recent congressional hearing offers a telling glimpse into the situation. During a discussion, Representative Steven Horsford (D-NV) confronted Jamieson Greer, the trade representative, with pointed questions about the administration’s trade policies.
Rep. Horsford pressed:
What’s the strategy? These are real consequences for the American people and small businesses.
In a brief video clip of the exchange, which can be found below, the underlying tension is palpable:
Horsford continued, echoing the frustrations of many small business owners:
I had a group of small businesses in my office earlier today talking about the impacts of these tariffs on aluminum and steel. This is amateur hour, and it needs to stop. What does this even mean for your negotiating strategy? How are you in charge of negotiation if the president is tweeting about this from wherever the hell he is?
To which Greer responded, attempting to deflect responsibility:
“The president was elected, and he runs the trade policy, and I advise him and execute his trade policy.”
But Horsford was not finished. He pressed further:
Did you know that this was happening?
Greer responded vaguely, “We have been discussing all kinds of…”
Horsford interjected, highlighting further disarray:
And there’s another member of the cabinet, Bessett, who just canceled coming to the hill to avoid talking about the market ’cause it’s in turmoil. This is just days after it became clear there was no strategy, no plan.
Conclusion: A Lack of Direction
This exchange exemplifies the disorganization that has plagued the Trump administration’s approach to trade policy. The apparent lack of a coherent strategy not only raises questions about the decision-making process but also highlights the tangible impacts on American businesses and their livelihoods. As tariffs and trade negotiations ripple through the economy, the need for a well-defined policy becomes increasingly critical—something that seems to be lost in the current chaos.
