Political Tug-of-War: Gallego Defends Fetterman Amid Health Scrutiny
BUCKS COUNTY, Pennsylvania — In a recent statement, Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego voiced his concerns regarding Republican attempts to shift Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman’s political stance towards the right. Gallego emphasized the importance of keeping Fetterman, who is facing increasing scrutiny over his health and evolving political identity, firmly within the Democratic fold.
“There needs to be space for Fetterman and for other senators in our caucus,” Gallego remarked in a Saturday interview. “He continues to advocate for working-class people. We might not always see eye to eye, but that’s not a prerequisite for collaboration.”
As some Democrats have begun to distance themselves from Fetterman, a surprising number of Republican senators have rallied in his defense following reports that both current and former staff members have expressed concerns about his mental and physical well-being. Notable GOP figures, including Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), have taken to social media to support Fetterman.
“The radical left is attacking him with dishonest, vicious claims because he’s pro-Israel, and they prefer politicians who are reliably anti-Israel,” Cotton stated.
When questioned about whether Republicans are attempting to sway Fetterman towards their agenda, Gallego did not mince words: “Of course.”
“In the Marines, we refer to these as ‘fuck-fuck games,’” Gallego quipped, during his town hall visit to Pennsylvania.
Fetterman has consistently asserted his loyalty to the Democratic Party and his refusal to switch allegiances. Nonetheless, some conservatives are actively trying to persuade him to align with their priorities. A conservative organization, the Club for Growth, is airing a television ad in Pennsylvania that commends Fetterman for “standing up for every working family in PA” while urging him to support former President Donald Trump’s tax cuts.
Despite this push, Fetterman has previously voted against budget proposals that would extend Trump’s initial tax cuts and reiterated his opposition on Friday. Gallego expressed confidence that Fetterman would remain steadfast, asserting, “The last thing he’ll do is harm working-class families by backing the reconciliation bill.”
While Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has praised Fetterman as an “all-star” performing admirably in office, several House Democrats from his home state have reacted with skepticism, suggesting that recent reports warrant scrutiny and encouraging voters to take note. Additionally, Fetterman has faced criticism from some left-leaning circles due to his firm stance on Israel and a recent meeting with Trump.
Throughout Gallego’s town hall, he consistently emphasized the necessity for Democrats to maintain an inclusive party. When confronted by an audience member about a fundraiser he held with Marc Andreessen, a pro-Trump entrepreneur, Gallego defended his actions by noting, “He runs the largest venture capital firm in Arizona.”
“We became so purist that we started excluding people from the tent — and now there aren’t enough of us inside to win elections,” he said, eliciting applause.
Gallego’s visit to Pennsylvania, a key battleground state, has sparked speculation regarding his potential interest in a future presidential campaign. In an interview with NBC News, when asked about the prospect of running for the White House, Gallego candidly replied, “Has it ever crossed my mind? Of course, I’m an elected official; it crosses my mind. Am I thinking about it right now? Absolutely not.”
