Whitmer emphasized the need for a more strategic approach to tariffs in her speech, acknowledging their potential impact on American industries and workers. While she did not outright condemn tariffs, she cautioned against using them as a blanket solution without a clear objective in mind. Additionally, she criticized Trump’s tariffs, warning of the negative consequences they could have on American manufacturing, consumers, and employment. Jared Polis, a potential 2028 nominee and a supporter of free trade, responded to Whitmer’s comments by criticizing tariffs as harmful to American manufacturing and leading to higher prices. Despite being part of the backlash against Whitmer, Polis did not want to start a feud and emphasized the need for unity within the Democratic Party. Additionally, a memo by Democratic pollster Blue Rose Research found that arguments emphasizing “responsible” tariffs were moderately effective in messaging. However, the most effective arguments against tariffs focused on their negative impact on the middle class and tied them to broader issues in Trump’s administration. Despite differing opinions within the party, the negative effects of tariffs on the economy are reflected in Trump’s declining approval ratings and public opposition to tariffs. Some Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, have remained relatively quiet on the issue, while others, like Rep. Jared Golden and the United Auto Workers, have expressed support for tariffs in certain industries. Their support is seen as an attempt to appeal to Trump-supporting constituencies. Overall, Democratic leadership wants the party to focus on addressing the challenges presented by tariffs and the impact on the economy. In a recent interview with The New Republic, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed the ongoing intra-party debate, emphasizing the need to postpone discussions until the country can engage in a more enlightened policy debate.

Jeffries expressed concern over the current state of affairs, stating, “What we have is a president taking a wrecking ball, a sledgehammer, and a chainsaw to the economy and everything that matters.” He stressed the importance of maintaining a strong and principled opposition in the face of such challenges.

Senator Bennet echoed Jeffries’ sentiments, highlighting the need for measured discourse. “A campfire is good. A forest fire is bad,” he remarked. “We’re not debating the merit of fire.”

As the debate continues within the party, it is clear that both Jeffries and Bennet are focused on addressing the pressing issues at hand with thoughtful and principled opposition. Their commitment to constructive dialogue and principled resistance will be crucial in navigating the current political landscape. following sentence:
