Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has astutely recognized a strategic opportunity within the MAGA crowd’s call for the release of the Epstein files.
By seizing this moment, Jeffries aims not only to create a rift between Trump and his congressional allies but also to draw a connection between Jeffrey Epstein’s scandals and the corruption that taints Trump and the Republican Party as a whole.
And it appears his intuition was spot on. Jeffries has successfully driven a wedge between the Republican ranks, leaving Trump to flounder without his usual support.
In early July, Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) first took the plunge into this contentious issue, soon followed by Jeffries, who has since rallied Democrats and urged all leadership in the House to maintain pressure regarding the Epstein revelations.
Politico reported on the remarkable effectiveness of this Democratic maneuver:
This strategy has effectively commandeered the House, derailed the agenda of Hill Republicans, and compelled Speaker Mike Johnson to send lawmakers home early for their August recess. Not to mention, it has embarrassed Trump and revealed the surprising limitations of his grip on a party he has dominated for nearly a decade.
“We’ve been trying to say Trump is full of shit for years and it hasn’t really stuck, right? But something about this topic is making a healthy portion of MAGA world — particularly folks who are not ideologically aligned with Trump but kind of flirted with him last year when they pulled the lever for him — be like, ‘Yea, he’s definitely full of shit,’” a senior Democratic campaign aide disclosed, speaking on condition of anonymity to provide candid insights into the dynamics on Capitol Hill.
…
“Everyone’s always talking about Trump being ‘Teflon’ — obviously that’s because all Hill Republicans are pretty much a suit of armor for him, right? But in this instance, they’re not,” continued the senior Democratic aide. “This exposes him to more attacks that would normally be dismissed, allowing us to effectively undermine his support while creating chaos among Republicans.”
Democrats have found such success that they’ve forced Speaker Mike Johnson to effectively shut down the House rather than risk votes or debates on Epstein.
Trump’s influence has largely stemmed from the protective shield provided by congressional Republicans, but on this particular issue, that shield appears to have crumbled.
