The Democratic Party appears to be experiencing a seismic shift, as indicated by the latest NBC News poll—a grim reflection of its current standing with the American public.
In what can only be described as a disheartening revelation, a mere 7% of Americans express a “very positive” view of the Democrats, marking a nadir in NBC’s polling history dating back to 1990. The broader sentiment is just as bleak, with only 27% of registered voters viewing the party in a positive light.
This widespread disillusionment is not confined to Republican circles; nearly 20% of self-identified Democrats have voiced their dissatisfaction, frustrated by a perceived lack of leadership and clear direction from their party.
“At this point, the Democratic Party doesn’t just need a makeover—it requires a complete overhaul,” remarked Jeff Horwitt, a Democratic pollster from Hart Research Associates, who collaborated on the survey with GOP pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, a staggering 55% of voters report a negative view of the party, with 38% expressing very negative sentiments.
NBC News elaborates:
“With these numbers, the Democratic Party is not in need of a rebrand. It needs to be rebooted,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the survey alongside GOP pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.
This decline can be partially attributed to disillusioned Democrats who witnessed their party’s defeat against Trump in 2024. In a notable shift from Trump’s first term, many self-identified Democratic voters now advocate for the party to maintain steadfast positions, even if this leads to legislative deadlock, rather than seeking compromise with the president.
The poll captures the growing frustration within the party, particularly directed at Senate Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who recently sided with Republicans to push forward a GOP-designed spending bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown.
“When Donald Trump starts his day by complimenting Senate Democrats, we question the direction we’re headed,” stated Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
Reflecting on 2017, 59% of Democrats favored compromise with Trump to achieve legislative consensus, while only 33% preferred to hold firm on their positions. This sentiment has now reversed: almost two-thirds (65%) of Democrats want their representatives to adhere to their principles, even at the cost of bipartisan progress, with just 32% advocating for compromise.
previously reported that the Democratic Party faces significant turmoil, with its favorability ratings plummeting to historic lows, as indicated by a CNN poll conducted from March 6-9.
Even CNN, often perceived as leaning left, could not obscure the reality: a growing number of Americans are disenchanted with what they see as radical policies, incompetence, and incessant political strife from the current Democratic leadership.
The CNN poll reveals that a mere 29% of Americans hold a favorable view of the Democratic Party, a historic low since the network began tracking this data in 1992. This reflects a staggering 20-point drop since Joe Biden assumed office in 2021, a time when many still harbored hopes for a successful presidency.
According to the CNN data, only 63% of Democrats and independent voters leaning Democratic still view their party favorably, a significant decline from 81% in 2021. Conversely, Republican unity remains strong, with 79% of GOP voters expressing a positive outlook on their party.
Independents, who often play a pivotal role in elections, also reflect a dire situation for the Democrats, with only 19% viewing the party favorably, juxtaposed against 20% for Republicans.
