A recent speech by a pollster to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign has sparked discussions among top Democratic Party officials about how to approach President-elect Donald Trump in his second term. Molly Murphy, the pollster, emphasized the importance of focusing on Trump’s impact on voters’ wallets rather than getting distracted by every outrage he creates.

During a meeting at a Hyatt Regency hotel in Washington D.C., Murphy urged the DNC’s executive committee to rethink their strategy for confronting Trump in 2025. She pointed out that while Trump may be more popular than when he first took office, he is not as well-liked as President Joe Biden or former President Barack Obama were at their inaugurations. Murphy stressed that Trump’s strength lies in his handling of the economy, and Democrats should aim to challenge that in his second term.

One key takeaway from Murphy’s speech was the need for Democrats to address the concerns of key demographics that drifted away from the party in the last election, such as young people, Latinos, and Black voters. She argued that these voters are primarily concerned about the high cost of living, and that the party needs to focus on economic issues to win them back.

Murphy also cautioned against attacking Trump for violating norms, as she believed that these issues do not resonate with the voters the party lost in November. Instead, she suggested that Democrats should focus on Trump’s plans to cut taxes for the wealthy, implement tariffs that could raise consumer costs, and provide benefits to big corporations.

Overall, Murphy’s presentation highlighted a shift in the Democratic Party’s approach to Trump, with a focus on economic issues and a recognition that traditional norms may not be effective in appealing to disenchanted voters. This new strategy reflects a broader change in thinking among Democrats as they prepare for Trump’s second term in office.
