Democrats Put Veterans, Seniors, Public Safety at Risk with Shutdown Push

As the nation teeters on the edge of a government shutdown, Democrats are playing a high-stakes game of political poker, where the chips are crucial funding for veterans, seniors, law enforcement, and countless others relying on government services. With mounting pressure from organizations nationwide, civic leaders are urging the Democratic contingent to stay true to their commitments, ally with President Trump and the Republicans, and ensure the government continues to function for all Americans.

Voices from across the spectrum:

American Federation of Government Employees: “Federal employees are not merely collateral damage in a political tussle. They embody our veterans, caregivers, law enforcement officers, and everyday heroes serving this nation. They warrant stability and respect—not pink slips and political theatrics.”

America First Policy Institute: “Preserving the core values of the America First Agenda hinges on Congress approving a straightforward continuing resolution (CR) before the September 30 deadline. Ensuring a successful national comeback requires funding our operations. Ignoring this responsibility would threaten our economic and national security pursuits at home and abroad.”

Americans for Prosperity: “Today, Americans for Prosperity expressed their endorsement of the House Republican initiative aimed at circumventing a government shutdown through a clean continuing resolution (CR). This proposal preserves current funding levels while integrating targeted security enhancements for legislative, executive, and judicial officials. This measure, extending funds until November 21, is vital for keeping our governmental apparatus operational.”

American Legion: “The American Legion calls upon Congress to advance the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026, alongside the VA Extenders Act of 2025. This legislation is pivotal for maintaining vital services crucial to veterans’ healthcare, housing, and benefits. Extensions for critical initiatives, including the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program and rural mental health programs, are essential to combat veteran suicide and curb homelessness. Delays in these provisions directly affect the lives of veterans and their families. Swift passage of these bills is imperative to honor our commitments to those who served.”

American Telemedicine Association: “We implore Congress not to leave millions of patients and beleaguered healthcare providers dangling on the telehealth precipice as they negotiate government shutdown dynamics.”

Association of American Mature Citizens: “AMAC Action, representing over 2 million members nationwide, insists that Congress pass a straightforward Continuing Resolution (CR) to avert a government shutdown. The ramifications of such a shutdown would jeopardize essential services for seniors, from Social Security to veterans’ benefits. The resulting confusion and backlogs would impose undue hardship on older Americans. The priorities set forth by Democratic leaders—including healthcare for undocumented immigrants—are not only unpopular but unreasonable. We appeal to lawmakers to bypass political theatrics, act decisively, and safeguard the interests of America’s seniors. Pass the CR and maintain government operation.”

AMVETS: “AMVETS supports the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026, which safeguards vital veterans’ programs, including the Health Care for Homeless Veterans initiative. Congress must act swiftly to pass this legislation and ensure the VA can continue delivering essential services.”

Concerned Veterans for America: “A government shutdown threatens to devastate the veteran community, particularly the most vulnerable among us. The VA must fulfill its promise to provide care for our nation’s heroes. Failure to pass these extensions will impede the VA’s ability to deliver essential services, which could jeopardize the lives of thousands. It’s time for Congress to prioritize solutions that cut waste and prioritize the welfare of veterans and military families.”

Council of Local Prisons: “On behalf of the dedicated personnel within the Federal Bureau of Prisons, I urge you to prevent a government shutdown. Such an event would jeopardize institutional security and public safety, as correctional facilities must operate continuously, even during political differences. Staff members are duty-bound to report to work regardless of morale or payment disruptions.”

CURE: “The Senate must pass a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) to ensure government funding continues as the current fiscal year concludes.”

CTIA (The Wireless Association): “We back extending the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015 included in the House’s Continuing Resolution. The Act lays a framework for vital cybersecurity collaboration and must be reauthorized to maintain our resilience against evolving cyber threats.”

Independent Women’s Voice: “This clean continuing resolution is essential for preventing government disruption while Congress deliberates on responsible appropriations bills. The American public deserves a functional and efficient government.”

National Association of Home Builders: “We advocate for H.R. 5371, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026. The program’s continuation is essential for the National Flood Insurance Program, preventing adverse economic impacts and providing peace of mind to policyholders who depend on this coverage.”

National Association of Police Organizations: “Faced with the nearing end of the fiscal year, Congress must unite in passing a continuing resolution to secure public safety funding. Inaction would leave law enforcement without the resources needed to protect our cities and communities.”

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association: “We commend the House for advancing the continuing resolution, highlighting the need for stability and predictability for America’s farmers and ranchers.”

National Chicken Council: “In support of a Continuing Resolution (CR), we call upon the Senate to ensure the government remains operational for the benefit of American businesses.”

National Fraternal Order of Police: “Congress holds the vital duty of funding government operations. Allowing dysfunction to derail this responsibility would have far-reaching consequences on public safety initiatives.”

National Grocers Association: “A temporary continuing resolution is crucial to safeguard essential services that low-income consumers rely on, such as SNAP and WIC benefits.”

Parents Defending Education: “Maintaining government operations should transcend partisanship. A clean CR serves the public without diverting taxpayer dollars to non-essential programs.”

Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council: “We endorse the CR, emphasizing the importance of government stability for small business recovery. Uncertainty stifles growth and planning, and Congress must demonstrate commitment to a stable economic environment.”

Unify.US: “We firmly support H.R. 5371, a clean, short-term continuing resolution to keep the government running while Congress works on a comprehensive funding bill.”

U.S. Travel Association: “The looming shutdown is projected to result in $1 billion lost each week in the travel economy. Delays, disruptions, and reduced capacity during a shutdown would hurt travelers and overburden an already stretched governmental workforce.”

Vietnam Veterans of America: “The implications of a government shutdown for veterans are immediate and serious, risking delays in care and support for those who have served. This is not merely a theoretical exercise; every moment of inaction exacerbates the challenges faced by our veterans.”

Fox News: Democrats risk flood insurance lapse in their shutdown fight, home builders and White House warn

“As the September 30 funding deadline approaches, the Trump administration warns that countless Americans may lose flood insurance if Democrats do not support the House-passed spending bill extending the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). A lapse could stall roughly 1,300 property sales daily, significantly impacting the housing market.”

RealClearPolitics: WH to Dems: Shutdown Threatens WIC Benefits for Mothers, Children

“The repercussions of a shutdown extend beyond political posturing—millions of low-income women and children may face food insecurity without timely agreements to keep government operations open.”

The Hill: Veteran groups urge Congress against shutdown: ‘Resist the pull of political brinkmanship’

“Veteran organizations are urging Congress to act swiftly to pass a short-term spending measure to prevent a government shutdown, stressing the critical need for funding for veterans’ housing, benefits, and healthcare.”
