Greenland, the world’s largest island that is not its own continent, is a stunning landmass spanning over 836,000 square miles. Part of the Realm of Denmark, Greenland is home to a population of around 56,000, primarily consisting of the indigenous Inuit people who reside in the non-icy southern regions. The capital city, Nuuk, accommodates a significant portion of the country’s inhabitants, with the location experiencing only a few hours of daylight in mid-winter due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle.

Traditionally, hunting and fishing have sustained the livelihood of Greenlanders, with fishing continuing to play a crucial role in the nation’s economy. The island boasts breathtaking landscapes characterized by majestic mountains, fjords, and rugged coastlines. Photographer Dennis Lehtonen, who relocated to Greenland in 2023 and found employment in the local fish factories, has been captivated by the inherent beauty of the region.

Lehtonen’s photography captures the essence of Greenland, showcasing unique landscapes and quaint villages. Recently, he documented a remarkable event where enormous icebergs drifted past a community, highlighting the natural wonders of the island. His work focuses on the vernacular architecture and remote charm of Greenland while shedding light on the changing demographics.

Unfortunately, like many rural areas worldwide, Greenland is witnessing a decline in population in smaller settlements as younger individuals migrate to larger cities in search of better opportunities. This trend has led to the abandonment of homes in several regions, with a few ghost towns emerging since the mid-20th century.

Using drone technology, Lehtonen documents these surreal locations where traditional customs intersect with the modern, globalized world. His goal is to photograph all approximately 70 inhabited places in Greenland, creating a poignant visual record of the evolving landscape.

Reflecting on the demographic shifts, Lehtonen acknowledges the inevitable closure of some smaller settlements as younger generations gravitate towards urban centers. Through his lens, he captures the essence of Greenland’s remote villages, preserving their unique charm for future generations to appreciate.
