Denver’s Civic Center Park undergoing major renovation

Denver’s Civic Center Park is currently closed for its first major renovation in a century. The $50 million project aims to revamp the Greek Theater and enhance accessibility within the park, located in downtown Denver.

Despite the closure, some parts of the park will remain open during construction. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston expressed excitement about the project’s potential to accelerate the city’s growth during a recent groundbreaking ceremony.

The renovation’s first phase, expected to be completed by summer 2027, will feature a significant redesign of the Greek Theater. Studio Gang’s design includes relocating the stage, adding a large shade canopy, and ensuring wheelchair accessibility.

The overall goal is to attract new local events to Civic Center Park. In addition, a plaza dedicated to the “Gang of 19,” a group of disabled activists known for their impactful protest in 1978, will be constructed.

Plans also include creating more accessible pathways, secluded garden spaces, plazas, and landscaping throughout the park.

Historically inspired by the City Beautiful movement, Civic Center Park has been a focal point of community gatherings and events. The ongoing renovation project is part of efforts to activate the park and increase its appeal to residents and visitors.

While there were discussions about Denver potentially hosting the NFL draft in the park, the city ultimately did not submit a bid for the 2027 event.

Funding for the renovation project comes from various sources, with the Downtown Development Authority contributing $30 million. The rest of the funding will be sourced from Denver Parks and Recreation, the Elevate Denver Bond, grants, and private donations.

As construction progresses, events like the Christkindlmarket and the Outside Fest will be temporarily relocated to the Auraria Campus.
