A Denver teenager was found guilty on Friday of using an AR-15-style rifle to kill a woman three years ago after a minor car accident. The teenager, now 18, was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and attempted murder in the tragic incident that took place on West Colfax Avenue.
The prosecution argued that the teenager, a member of the Eastside Crips gang, opened fire after a minor collision in an attempt to gain status within the gang. Despite attempts by the defense to shift blame to another individual, the teenager was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.
The man who was driving the car at the time of the shooting was also convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison for giving permission to the teenager to start shooting.
The incident occurred late at night when the victim rear-ended the teenagers’ car at a traffic light. The teenager asked for permission to shoot, which was granted by the driver, leading to the fatal shooting of the woman.
The teenager fired multiple shots at the victim’s car, resulting in her tragic death. Despite initial charges as a juvenile, the case was later moved to adult court.
