The deputy commissioner of the New Zealand Police, Jevon McSkimming, remains on leave as he is being investigated by the Independent Police Conduct Authority and the New Zealand Police. This suspension has been ongoing for four months since a criminal investigation was initiated.

The specific nature of the allegations against McSkimming cannot be disclosed at this time. Despite inquiries, there has been no recent update on the progress of the investigation, as confirmed by a police spokesperson to RNZ.

In a brief statement, McSkimming’s lawyer stated that there were no comments to be made at this time. The initial suspension occurred before Christmas last year, with McSkimming being placed on full pay during the investigation.

McSkimming, who was considered for the top police job in 2022, currently holds the position of statutory deputy commissioner. He has a diverse career history within the police force, with experience in various areas such as road policing, strategy, media, and communications.

Having joined the police in 1996, McSkimming has worked in frontline roles in Auckland and Southland before moving into leadership positions. His resume includes overseeing significant restructures, managing IT systems, property assets, and vehicle fleets, as well as launching the 105 non-emergency number.

Despite the ongoing investigation, McSkimming looks forward to a swift resolution and hopes to resume his duties as Deputy Commissioner once the process is concluded.
