A Californian woman has received a sentence of five years in federal prison due to threats made against a federal judge in Texas. This incident serves as an alarming illustration of how political violence—often dismissed or downplayed by left-leaning commentators—has embedded itself in the fabric of American society.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas, 46-year-old Dolly Patterson confessed to sending an interstate threat directed at a federal judge in Amarillo in April 2023.

Her threatening online message read: “Tell that anti-abortion judge he better watch his back . . . for the rest of his life!”
Federal prosecutors noted her intent was unmistakably clear: Patterson aimed for her threat to be perceived as authentic, fully aware that she had crossed into the realm of criminality.
The court imposed the maximum statutory sentence—five years in prison. Federal authorities were clear in their stance.
“The safety of our federal judiciary is paramount,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson.
“Threats of violence against our judges are becoming increasingly frequent—whether online or in person. Such threats are illegal and will be prosecuted.”
This case highlights a more pervasive issue. The normalization of political intimidation, harassment, and violence appears to be increasingly accepted within progressive factions.
From protests spiraling into riots to personal menacing of judges, politicians, and law enforcement, a clear narrative emerges: when the Left does not achieve its objectives, often violence is the fallback strategy.
Judges have notably become targets of ire from activists who no longer regard the judiciary as a neutral arbiter, but rather as an impediment to their political ambitions.
The judge whom Patterson threatened is situated in Amarillo—a venue that has encountered significant legal challenges to Biden administration policies on abortion and healthcare.
In place of constructive debate or formal appeals, some activists resort to personal intimidation. This should concern anyone who values the rule of law.
For years, conservatives have been characterized as the root of social division.
However, evidence indicates that violent rhetoric and substantive threats traverse the political spectrum, often amplified by progressive activists who assert their commitment to “justice” while simultaneously undermining the very institutions that uphold civil society.

If progressive leaders genuinely aim to protect American institutions, they must adamantly denounce threats like these, rather than offering justifications when such behavior arises from their ranks.
