Dunedin’s former Glamis Hospital, a long-abandoned eyesore on Montpellier St, has finally found a new owner in Dunedin developer Blue Sky Property Group. The director, Lyndon Fairbairn, confirmed the purchase of the property, with plans to demolish the derelict building and develop the site into three-bedroom homes.

The abandoned hospital, a target for vandals and rats since 2011, has suffered from severe deterioration over the years, exacerbated by two suspicious fires in 2017 and 2018. The most recent fire, which occurred just last month, left the building beyond repair.

Mr. Fairbairn emphasized the urgent need to remove the dilapidated structure, citing the concerns of the neighborhood plagued by parties, graffiti, and safety hazards. Despite the high cost of demolition, Blue Sky Property Group is committed to clearing the site and transforming it into a valuable property.

The sale of the former hospital has been met with enthusiasm from the community, with neighbors looking forward to the removal of the blight on their street. Fire and Emergency New Zealand also expressed relief that the site will now be put to positive use, eliminating the risks associated with derelict buildings.

With plans to take ownership in February and expedite the demolition process, Blue Sky Property Group aims to revitalize the once-troubled site into a safe and attractive space for the neighborhood.
