Amy MacIver, a resident of Māpua, lost her life in the Klondyke Valley near Reefton on Friday.
“Our hearts go out to her family and her climbing partner,” stated the police today.
Authorities were alerted around 6.30pm on Friday about a personal locator beacon being activated near the Klondyke Rahu Saddle.
Search teams were dispatched and discovered two individuals, with one being found deceased.
Due to adverse weather conditions, the body could not be retrieved by helicopter until the following day.
Police have reported the incident to the coroner for further investigation.
Māpua’s Java Hut café shared on Facebook the devastating news of the passing of “our amazing Amy”, describing her as passionate, enthusiastic, and kind.
“Amy tragically lost her life while tramping on Friday evening. Such shocking and heartbreaking news. Our deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Amy,” the post read.
A memorial service for MacIver is scheduled to take place in the New Year.
