New York Studio School

Master of Fine Arts (MFA)

NYSS’s two-year MFA program, consisting of 60 credits, aims to inspire emerging artists to unleash their creativity, hone their technical skills, and commit to their artistic pursuits. Each semester kicks off with a transformative two-week Marathon led by NYSS and guest faculty, sparking fresh ideas and setting the tone for the semester ahead. The first year focuses on a diverse array of studio courses, while the second year encourages students to delve deeper into their individual artistic visions. The curriculum includes the Evening Lecture Series, technical workshops, personalized guidance from faculty, group critiques, visits from renowned artists, and faculty-led excursions. The weekly Critical Studies seminar delves into theoretical frameworks for art creation, culminating in a written thesis and Thesis Exhibition. With guidance from globally recognized artists and dedicated educators, NYSS’s immersive teaching approach challenges students to push their boundaries and establish ethical and philosophical foundations for their artistic endeavors.

Certificate Program

The three-year NYSS Certificate Program offers artists a unique opportunity to deepen their artistic practice, whether in-person or virtually. Each semester commences with the School’s signature two-week Marathon, followed by twelve weeks of coursework and independent studio work. The program also includes the Evening Lecture Series, weekly seminars, professional workshops, faculty guidance, group critiques, exhibition prospects, artist visits, and guided trips. Students can choose to start in the fall or spring and have the flexibility to engage in-person or virtually on a semester-by-semester basis. The curriculum immerses students in intensive studio practice, guided by experienced faculty and supported by a wide range of classes centered on perceptual study. The culmination of the three-year program is the Certificate Completion Exhibition. The Virtual Certificate Program provides artists worldwide with the opportunity to enhance their craft and expand their artistic horizons within their existing studio space. By combining NYSS’s studio-focused teaching methods with personalized online learning, the virtual program caters to aspiring and practicing artists seeking to cultivate the skills and techniques necessary for a lifetime of creative expression.
