Strong winds caused chaos at Denver International Airport on Tuesday, leading to hundreds of flight delays and cancellations. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that departing flights were delayed by an average of 30 minutes due to the gusty conditions.
According to FlightAware, there were 270 flight delays and 23 cancellations by mid-afternoon. SkyWest, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines were among the carriers most affected, with a significant number of delayed and canceled flights.
The National Weather Service recorded sustained winds of up to 37 mph and gusts reaching 47 mph, prompting a red flag warning for the Front Range and Eastern Plains. This warning highlighted the increased risk of wildfires due to the combination of high winds and low humidity.
