The Galen Center was buzzing with excitement as USC faced off against their crosstown rival UCLA in a highly anticipated top-10 matchup. Among the crowd of celebrities in attendance were Vanessa and Natalia Bryant, Flea, Issa Rae, Kevin Hart, and Los Angeles Sparks players Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby. The presence of these icons added an extra layer of anticipation to the game, but it was USC’s own JuJu Watkins who stole the show.

Watkins, a sophomore, put on a dazzling display, finishing the game with 38 points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocks in USC’s 71-60 victory. This performance was not only her second-highest scoring total of the season but also a career-best in blocks. Watkins’ versatility was on full display as she became the first Division I player in the last 20 seasons to post 35 points, 5 blocks, and 5 assists in a single game.

Heading into the game, UCLA coach Cori Close had touted her star player, Lauren Betts, as a contender for Player of the Year. However, it was Watkins who proved to be the most impactful player on the court that night, showcasing her skills on both ends of the floor. From her sharpshooting from beyond the arc to her lockdown defense on Betts, Watkins dominated every facet of the game.

In the first half, Watkins torched UCLA’s defense with her deadly three-point shooting, making 6 of 7 attempts from downtown. As the game progressed, she adjusted to UCLA’s defensive schemes and found ways to impact the game in other ways, including stifling Betts on the defensive end.

Watkins’ ability to adapt and excel in different situations was evident throughout the game. Whether it was knocking down critical shots, locking down key players on defense, or creating scoring opportunities in transition, Watkins proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb praised Watkins’ heroics on the court, highlighting her shot-making ability and intensity. Watkins’ performance against UCLA showcased her growth and maturity as a player, solidifying her case for national Player of the Year honors.

As the final buzzer sounded and USC emerged victorious, Watkins reflected on the significance of playing on such a big stage and the support of the fans and celebrities in attendance. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her skills and emphasized the importance of staying joyful in the face of challenges.

Overall, Watkins’ standout performance against UCLA was a testament to her talent and determination. As she continues to shine on the court, it’s clear that she is a rising star in women’s college basketball.
