Alfonso Cuarón, known for his work on acclaimed films such as “Children of Men” and “Roma,” has ventured into the world of series with AppleTV+’s “Disclaimer.” For this project, he enlisted the help of editor Adam Gough, with whom he had previously collaborated on “Children of Men” and “Roma.” Their established shorthand and minimal communication style proved to be crucial in their successful partnership.

“Disclaimer” is based on the novel by Renée Knight and follows the story of Catherine Ravenscroft, a journalist played by Cate Blanchett, who receives a novel that exposes her darkest secrets. Sacha Baron Cohen portrays her husband, Robert, while Kodi Smit-McPhee plays their son Nicholas. The series employs a non-linear structure, shifting between different perspectives and timelines, with episode 5 being a standout moment for Gough.

In this episode, the entrapment of catfishing plays a central role, particularly in a tense Instagram sequence between characters Steven and Nicholas. Gough had to navigate the different styles of the show’s cinematographers, Bruno Delbonnel and Emmanuel Lubezki, while maintaining continuity in lighting and timing. The scripted Instagram sequence presented a challenge, as it required Gough to juggle multiple perspectives and enhance tension without relying on graphic overlays.

As the series reaches its finale, Gough once again relies on the script to guide his editing decisions. The episode reveals a twist in the narrative, where Catherine’s perspective shifts dramatically, unveiling a traumatic event from her past. Gough utilizes jump cuts and rough editing techniques to convey the emotional intensity of the revelation, working closely with Cuarón to capture the essence of the scene.

Throughout the editing process, Gough and Cuarón’s collaborative approach shines through, with minimal communication and a shared understanding of the story’s themes. As the series concludes, Gough pays particular attention to the final moments, ensuring a sense of closure and resolution for the characters. The ending scene, with Catherine and Nicholas back at the house, encapsulates the heart of “Disclaimer,” leaving viewers with a definitive punctuation mark on the story.

In conclusion, “Disclaimer” showcases the creative synergy between Alfonso Cuarón and Adam Gough, resulting in a compelling and visually stunning series that delves into themes of betrayal, secrets, and redemption. The unique editing style and narrative structure make it a standout addition to the AppleTV+ lineup, offering viewers a gripping and thought-provoking viewing experience.
