Disney and U.K. Network ITV Announce Groundbreaking Content Sharing Pact
Disney and U.K. network ITV have joined forces in a groundbreaking initiative that will see a curated selection of content shared across their respective streaming services. This collaboration, described as a “first-of-its-kind initiative,” aims to offer viewers a taste of each other’s programming.
“Taste of ITVX” on Disney+
Disney+ will introduce a “promotional selection” of titles from ITV’s ITVX under the banner “Taste of ITVX.” Viewers can look forward to popular shows such as “Mr. Bates vs The Post Office,” “Spy Amongst Friends,” and selected seasons of the reality hit “Love Island.”
“Taste of Disney+” on ITVX
On the other hand, ITVX will feature a “Taste of Disney+” selection, including shows like FX’s “The Bear,” Lucasfilm’s “Andor,” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Additionally, selected series of reality titles such as “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” and “The Kardashians” will be available for viewers to enjoy.
Shared Content Library
Approximately 70-100 hours of content from each streaming platform’s library will be shared between Disney+ and ITVX.
Launch Date and Availability
The service is set to launch on both platforms on July 16 and will be accessible to customers free of charge. The curated selection of titles will be refreshed every couple of months to provide viewers with fresh content.
Driving Subscriptions and Audience Engagement
Disney+ EMEA general manager Karl Holmes highlighted the strategic move to target ITV’s older audience with content that typically appeals to adults. By showcasing earlier series of popular franchises, the aim is to attract new subscribers to Disney+ and enhance audience engagement.
Industry Trends and Future Collaborations
The collaboration between Disney and ITV follows a trend in the streaming industry, where major players are forming partnerships with traditional broadcasters. Holmes mentioned ongoing discussions in several European markets for similar deals, emphasizing the importance of mutual sustainability and support.
Future Evolution of Partnership
While the content sharing deal is a significant milestone, both companies anticipate further collaboration in the future. Disney+ has already commissioned shows from ITV Studios, indicating a strong partnership that is likely to evolve over time.
Statements from Executives
Joe Earley, President of Direct-to-Consumer at Disney Entertainment, expressed excitement about the collaboration, while ITV’s Managing Director Kevin Lygo emphasized the mutual benefits of the alliance in expanding viewers’ access to a diverse range of content.
This innovative partnership between Disney and ITV represents a new era of collaboration in the streaming industry, offering viewers a unique and diverse selection of content across both platforms.
