Disney Secret Talks to Revive Jimmy Kimmel’s Late-Night Show
Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night future is up in the air as Disney, the parent company of ABC, is reportedly working behind the scenes to negotiate the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the show was indefinitely suspended, according to RadarOnline.com.
The suspension came after Kimmel delivered a controversial monologue about conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 15, which sparked backlash from major broadcasting corporations and regulators.
Insiders have revealed that discussions are currently ongoing to find compromises that would bring Kimmel back on air. However, Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns several ABC affiliates, had previously demanded that Kimmel issue an apology and make a donation to Turning Point USA, Kirk’s organization.
Nexstar, another influential station owner, also joined the pressure campaign, announcing that they would drop the program following comments made by Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr.
“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr stated during a podcast interview in response to Kimmel’s remarks. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take actions on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
In response to the mounting pressure, Disney announced the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, sparking a debate over free speech. While Kimmel has not made any public statements regarding the controversy, insiders suggest that it remains uncertain whether he will comply with Sinclair’s demands or hold his ground.
The suspension has put the jobs of Kimmel’s staff, totaling around 200 people, at risk. Sources have indicated that employees will continue to receive pay through next week, but their long-term employment status is uncertain. A Disney source remains hopeful that a resolution can be reached soon: “Everyone deeply values him and wants him to come back. But he has to take down the temperature.”
There are concerns that Disney could face a “real, serious threat” of losing broadcast licenses if the standoff persists, according to one insider.
Adding to the tension, reports suggest that Kimmel had prepared another controversial monologue for Wednesday’s show, this time targeting Fox News and MAGA supporters. ABC and Disney executives reportedly requested that he tone down the remarks, but Kimmel refused, leading to the suspension.
The controversy began when Kimmel opened his Monday show with comments on Kirk’s assassination and criticized the political response to the incident.
“The MAGA gang are desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel stated. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”
Kimmel also made fun of Donald Trump’s reaction when asked about Kirk’s death. Trump responded with, “I think very good”, before pointing to construction at the White House ballroom. Kimmel joked, “He’s at the fourth stage of grief: construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”
Two days after Kimmel’s comments, Carr issued his warning and Disney suspended the show. Hollywood stars and Kimmel’s late-night colleagues, including Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers, came to his defense.
However, conservatives celebrated the suspension. On Truth Social, the former president wrote: “Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!”
