Woke Disney’s live-action adaptation of Snow White, released on March 19, has already concluded its box office journey by late April, solidifying its status as one of the most significant misfires in Hollywood history.
The film has turned out to be a monumental blunder for Disney, as its performance at the global box office continues to be starkly disappointing.
With a jaw-dropping production budget estimated between $250 million and $270 million, along with roughly $140 million allocated for marketing and distribution, the film must accumulate at least $427 million worldwide to simply break even.
Currently, the film has managed to gross around $195.2 million globally. According to industry analyses, Snow White would need to secure a minimum of $427.8 million in box office revenue to break even, taking into account the standard revenue sharing between studios and theaters, as reported by Forbes.
Given its current earnings, Snow White is on course to result in an estimated financial loss of around $115 million for Disney, according to the New York Post.
However, with reports suggesting that production expenses may have soared to $350 million due to reshoots and unforeseen costs, the break-even point could be even more daunting, potentially requiring as much as $700 million in global box office revenue.
Disney’s woke reinterpretation of the beloved classic “Snow White” faced a disastrous opening weekend in March, both in the United States and internationally.
During its debut weekend, “Snow White” raked in about $43 million in domestic ticket sales, complemented by an additional $44 million from overseas markets, totaling around $87 million globally.
The film’s launch was overshadowed by controversies, particularly revolving around actress Rachel Zegler.
Even Jonah Platt, son of the film’s producer, Marc Platt, publicly criticized lead actress Rachel Zegler on social media, attributing the film’s underperformance to her “immature” and “narcissistic” demeanor during promotional events.
Zegler, often perceived as a self-absorbed and contentious figure, stirred the pot by labeling the iconic Prince Charming as a “stalker” and “weird,” while vowing to deliver a feminist twist where Snow White aspires to be a “leader” rather than fall in love.
While the initial weekend was disappointing, the second weekend proved to be a complete fiasco!
In its second weekend, “Snow White” sold fewer tickets than both “A Working Man” and “The Chosen: Last Supper.”
According to Box Office Mojo, “Snow White” landed in third place, trailing behind the story of the Last Supper featuring Jesus Christ. “The Chosen” garnered $5,103,354 in ticket sales, while “Snow White” managed only $3,700,000.
It appears that the forecasts may indeed hold true. “Snow White” could incur a staggering loss of up to a quarter of a billion dollars for Disney.
Perhaps next time, they might consider casting a more relatable star instead of someone embroiled in controversy. Just a thought.
