Second Suspect Charged in 2024 Chicago Carjacking After DNA Evidence Links Him to Crime
A second individual has been implicated in connection with a carjacking that took place in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood in 2024, following the discovery of DNA evidence linking him to the incident, authorities have confirmed.
Ricky Hill, aged 33, was already being held in custody on an unrelated charge of a stolen vehicle when he was recently charged with robbery and vehicular hijacking related to the events that transpired on April 21, 2024. 35-year-old Johnetta Smith had been previously charged in connection with the same carjacking.
Court documents reveal that the victim, a 45-year-old individual, had parked his black 2013 Cadillac CTS in an alley behind the 10900 block of South Edbrooke Avenue and had momentarily stepped out of the vehicle to attend to a personal matter when he was approached from behind by a man and a woman.
The woman reportedly took control of the driver’s seat while the man entered the passenger side. When the victim attempted to intervene, the male suspect brandished a firearm and warned, “You don’t want to die tonight,” before seizing the victim’s wallet. Subsequently, both perpetrators fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.
Following the discovery of the abandoned Cadillac in the 7100 block of South Ashland two days later, law enforcement officers processed the vehicle for DNA and fingerprints. Over a year later, on May 15, DNA evidence linked Smith to the stolen vehicle, with the victim later identifying her from a photo lineup.
Prosecutors also revealed that a separate DNA match connected Hill to the same car that was involved in the carjacking. Smith reportedly informed authorities that Hill was her partner in the crime and claimed that he was in possession of a weapon during the incident.
Both Smith and Hill now face charges of vehicular hijacking and robbery in connection with the Roseland carjacking.
Additionally, Smith is implicated in a separate carjacking that occurred just two weeks after DNA evidence had identified her in the initial case but prior to her arrest. On May 29, 2025, authorities discovered Smith behind the wheel of a 2013 Chevy Equinox that had been stolen from a 71-year-old man in the same 7100 block of South Ashland.
In this subsequent case, Smith is facing additional charges including vehicular hijacking, aggravated fleeing, aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance.
