DNC announces candidate forums, sets chair election for Feb. 1

The Democratic National Committee has set the date for its chair’s election, which will take place on Feb. 1. This election is seen as a crucial moment for the party following the recent defeat of Kamala Harris in her bid for re-election.

The election will be held during the committee’s winter meeting at the National Harbor in Maryland, starting on Jan. 30 and concluding with the election on Feb. 1. Leading up to the election, the DNC will host four candidate forums, some of which will be in-person and others virtual.

Two candidates have already announced their bids for the chair position – Ken Martin, the Chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. However, other potential contenders are still in the consideration phase, including Ben Wikler, Chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, Mallory McMorrow, a Michigan state Senator, and Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha.

The DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee is set to meet on Dec. 12 to finalize the election process. In 2021, the committee established requirements for candidates to appear on the ballot, including submitting at least 40 signatures from DNC members. The same threshold will apply for candidates to participate in the candidate forums in January.

Outgoing DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, who will not seek re-election, emphasized the importance of transparency and equity in the election process. In a letter to DNC members, Harrison stated, “The DNC is committed to running a transparent, equitable, and impartial election for the next generation of leadership to guide the party forward.”

The upcoming chair’s election will be a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party as it looks to regroup and strategize following recent electoral setbacks. It remains to be seen who will emerge as the new leader of the DNC and steer the party towards future success.
