Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) strongly criticized White House border czar Tom Homan for questioning her efforts to inform her constituents of their constitutional and legal rights. During a town hall event in New York City, Ocasio-Cortez revealed that Homan had threatened to refer her to the Justice Department after she conducted a “Know Your Rights with ICE” webinar for those concerned about President Trump’s immigration policies. She defiantly declared, “Come for me, you’re going to have to come for me. Do I look like I care?”
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments came on the same day that Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) responded to Homan’s suggestion that he could be arrested for providing guidance to state employees on how to handle encounters with federal immigration agents. Evers accused Republicans of spreading misinformation to create a fake controversy.
Homan, in a separate appearance on Fox News, accused Ocasio-Cortez of teaching people how to evade law enforcement and questioned whether she was crossing the line. Ocasio-Cortez later wrote to Attorney General Pam Bondi to inquire about Homan’s actions.
During her town hall, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the importance of exercising constitutional rights and standing up to intimidation. She encouraged people to challenge attempts to suppress their rights and reiterated that informing others of their legal rights is not illegal. I feel the same way about it.” following sentence:
