Quadrupedal robots have long struggled to navigate slippery or muddy terrain, as their stability is compromised in such challenging environments. However, a team of engineers from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) in Estonia may have found a solution by drawing inspiration from animals that thrive in boggy habitats. In a recent study published in “Bioinspiration & Biomimetics,” the researchers proposed that dog-like robots could benefit from mimicking the design of giant moose feet.

Lead by TalTech biorobotics professor Maarja Kruusmaa, the team highlighted the limitations of current robots in accessing important terrestrial environments such as wetlands, bogs, and coastal marshes. By studying the physical characteristics of moose feet, specifically their cloven hooves, the researchers discovered key features that enable these animals to maneuver through muddy terrain effectively. The cloven hooves’ ability to spread out and contract during each step allows moose to avoid sinking too deeply into the mire. Moreover, the hooves exhibit suction properties that help the animals break surface tension and prevent them from getting stuck in the mud.

Building on these findings, the team designed silicone slippers inspired by moose feet for a quadrupedal robot. Lab experiments showed that these bio-inspired booties reduced sinkage depth by 46% and suction force by a similar percentage. Additionally, the accessories decreased the robot’s walking energy cost by up to 70%.

Taking their moose-footed robot for a test walk in the Estonian woods, the engineers observed a significant improvement in performance. The robot experienced over a 38% reduction in mechanical transport cost and a 55% increase in speed. Importantly, the researchers noted that the redesigned feet did not present any disadvantages on hard ground, indicating the overall versatility and efficiency of the robot in natural terrains.

By incorporating these simple silicone alterations, future quadruped robots could potentially access previously inaccessible environments for tasks such as land surveys, security operations, and rescue missions.
