Freelance ocean writer Melissa Hobson has been investigating a new project that is revolutionizing the study of dolphin vocalizations. This project involves the development of a large language model (LLM) specifically designed to interpret dolphin sounds and potentially enable two-way communication with these marine mammals.

Thea Taylor, a marine biologist and managing director of the Sussex Dolphin Project, explains that dolphins use a variety of vocalizations for communication, including whistles for identification, clicks for navigation, and burst pulses for social interactions. These sounds have long been a subject of study for researchers trying to unravel the mysteries of dolphin communication.

Arik Kershenbaum, a zoologist at the University of Cambridge, emphasizes that there is still much we don’t know about how dolphins communicate and the extent of their language capabilities. Researchers have spent years collecting data on dolphin vocalizations, but the process of analyzing this data manually is time-consuming and challenging.

This is where the DolphinGemma project comes in. Developed by Google in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project, DolphinGemma is an AI model trained on decades of dolphin vocalization data. By generating dolphin-like sound sequences, the AI has been able to produce unique vocalizations that researchers had previously been unable to replicate.

Thad Starner, a professor at Georgia Tech and research scientist at Google, and Denise Herzing, founder of the Wild Dolphin Project, are excited about the potential of DolphinGemma to enhance our understanding of dolphin communication. The AI model has successfully created a type of sound known as VCM3s, a variation on burst pulses that dolphins use in two-way communication with humans.

The ability to generate these unique dolphin sounds could be a significant step towards establishing meaningful communication with dolphins. By leveraging the power of AI, researchers hope to uncover new insights into dolphin language and deepen our connection with these remarkable animals. With projects like DolphinGemma leading the way, the future of dolphin communication looks brighter than ever. In addition to analyzing natural dolphin sounds, the team is also exploring how dolphins respond to synthesized sounds representing objects like seagrass or toys. Using a technology called CHAT (cetacean hearing augmented telemetry), researchers can play these sounds underwater and observe the dolphins’ reactions.

The CHAT system has evolved over the years, becoming more compact and user-friendly. Originally consisting of multiple components, it now fits into a single unit worn on the chest. This advancement has made it easier for researchers like Denise Herzing to interact with dolphins underwater without the risk of cumbersome equipment.

One of the team’s goals is to teach dolphins to associate specific sounds with objects, such as toys. By playing synthetic whistles and exchanging toys in the dolphins’ presence, researchers hope to encourage the dolphins to mimic the sounds and request the corresponding objects.
